I have been coming to Buddakan since I moved to New York in 2012. I was happy to tell all my friends that it is my "favorite" restaurant in new york city, which is a big deal if you live in NYC. Safe to say, I will not be coming back here ever again due to the total mishandling of my meal on Friday, 4/1/22. From the minute the waiter came (I can't recall his name), he was impolite and rude. When I told him I have a shellfish allergy he rolled his eyes, and dismissed my questions about the ingredients in the food. He proceeded to ask if I can eat oyster sauce, and when I asked if there was shellfish in oyster sauce (BTW there are vegetarian oyster sauces too which is why I asked), he rudely responded "I mean..it's made from oysters." He didn't explain the menu at all or point out any shellfish-free dishes. (I just developed this allergy 4 months ago so I wasn't aware of Buddakan's shellfish-free options). He proceeded to put in our orders, and the busser brought the food out. When they put the sauces down I explicitly asked about each item and if there was definitely no shellfish in it, to which he proceeded to say "no." I had a bite of the sauce, and 2 minutes later the waiter comes back and says "actually there is shellfish in that, I brought it on the side for the other person." WHY oh WHY would you bring an allergen to the table without being EXTREMELY explicit about it? I ended up having a reaction in the restaurant.After that, I will say the manager - Spencer, was very helpful and nice after the incident but I was very turned off when our ENTIRE meal was not comped, but only half of it. They basically ruined my night and I'm so glad I didn't have to go to the hospital due to the waiter's lack of care and blatant negligence. Buddakan - an allergy is not a preference. So disappointed.
